Expressive Landscapes - Palette Knife Oil Painting Workshop

Tuesday, August 5th (4-7pm)

Twin Lights Park State Park, Cape Elizabeth

No experience is necessary to join this landscape painting course. Basic color theory and image composition will build the foundation for this expressive palette knife workshop. Paintings will be completed en-plein air, overlooking the coastline of Twin Lights in Cape Elizabeth. Emphasis will be placed on vibrant color use and energetic mark-making.  

Colin McGuire is a local oil painter who has worked with the palette knife for over a decade. His education is rooted in impressionism with an eye towards contemporary landscape techniques.

Class will begin with a discussion of color and a painting demonstration. Next, students will dive in with color and paint, focusing on capturing the light and mood of the day. Students can plan to experiment with multiple paintings, with the understanding that they will aim to refine one or more images by the end of the day.

Suggested materials:

*Plein-Air Easel (You can also work seated outdoors)

*Various sizes of gessoed panels 8x10, 9x12, or 12,16 (plan to bring at least 1)

*Palette or Palette Paper

*Palette Knife (various sizes)

*Paper Towels

*Sketch Pad and Pencil

Suggested Oil Paints

*Primary Colors Red (Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson ), Yellow (Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow), Blue (Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue), and White (Titanium)
